Open doors slowly.
• Push linen carts; do not pull them.
• Never carry more than 2 large packs (24 pounds) at one time.
• Bend down, rather than over, to reach items on lower shelves.
• Physically turn rather than twist to reach items located behind or to the side.
5.10. ASEPTIC TECHNIQUE
The method by which contamination by micro organisms is prevented.
5.10.1. Principles:
• All items within a sterile field must be sterile.
• The edges of sterile containers are not considered sterile once the package is
opened.
• Sterile personnel and items should only contact sterile areas: un -sterile
personnel and items should only come into contact with un -sterile areas.
• Movement within or around sterile field must not cause contamination of the
sterile field.
• Sterile barriers that have been permeated must be considered contaminated.
• Items of doubtful sterility are considered un -sterile.
• Sterile items must be introduced to the sterile field in an aseptic manner that
does not compromise their sterility or the sterility of the sterile field.
5.10.2. Sterilization
• The process by which items are rendered free of micro organisms including
spores.
• Guidelines for preparing linen for Sterilization:
• Freshly laundered to avoid super -heating.
• Dry.
• Free of defects, lint and stains. Inspection is conducted over an illuminated
glass or Plexiglas table top.
• Items are to be fan -folded or rolled loosely.
• Alternate layers crossed to allow penetration of the sterilizing agent.
5.10.3. Packaging
• The purpose of packaging is to keep items sterile following Sterilization
process until they are opened and aseptically delivered to the sterile field.
• Packing must:
• Be impervious to micro organisms of 0.5 microns in diameter or length.
• Be moisture resistant.
• Be economical.
12.09 _19-
