Field Operations Policy and Procedures (Fo
Unembalmed decedents must be placed in a designated refrigeration unit within 24 hours of a
Company-affiliated location (or third party service provider)taking custody or sooner if possible.
The decedents must remain in the refrigerated unit until scheduled preparation service or legal
disposition is to occur. Once removed from refrigeration, embalming, disposition, or
refrigeration must occur within 15 hours.
Procedure.
1. Completely cover each decedent with a sheet or gown except when preparation or
mortuary services are being performed. For infant or fetal decedents see Handling_of
Infant Decedents.
2. Handle unembalmed decedents expeditiously, refrigerating as necessary (see
Refrigeration for complete instructions on refrigeration) based on the decedent's
condition and the timing of preparation procedures.
3. If storing unembalmed decedents in the refrigeration unit, when conditions warrant (due
to leakage) place a barrier(body bag or sheet plastic) under each decedent to contain any
leakage, place the decedent on a backboard and store on a cooler rack.
4. In cases where embalmed decedents (casketed and/or uncasketed) must be stored for an
extended period of time while awaiting final disposition (i.e. more than a week), store
decedents in a restricted area, refrigerating as necessary.
10.2 Care of Decedents in Refrigeration Units
Policy. Proper care of decedents must be taken at all times when storing within or moving in
and out of a refrigeration unit.
Procedure.
1. For placement of decedents within a refrigeration unit:
a. Never stack or place decedents or containers on the floor.
b. Never place multiple decedents on one shelf or table.
2. If a refrigeration unit is at such capacity that additional decedents cannot be properly
stored within it, refer to the location's Refrigeration Overflow Plan (FIN-CS098) (see
Refrigeration Unit Overflow below).
10.3 Refrigeration Unit Requirements
Policy. Each refrigeration unit intended for decedent storage must meet minimum requirements
to store decedents safely.
Version 2.1 Page 41 of 70 Revised:07/10/2015
Document Owner:Operations Support 0 2015 SCI Funeral&Cemetery Purchasing Cooperative,Inc.
