this pharmacy's name and address prior to offsite transport. If a sealed bag or sharps container is
placed into a larger container prior to transport, the outer containers must be labeled with the
transporter's name, address, and 24-hour phone number.
STORAGE LIMITS
Several states have RMW generator storage limits. The chart provided below lists states with
current storage limit regulations regarding medical waste. In order to comply with these storage
limits, sharps containers should be dated with the date on which storage first begins and the date on
which the container became full. The container must be transported off-site for final disposal
within the appropriate number of days from that date.
State
Allowed Storage Time Frame
Allowed Storage Time Frame
for Sharps
for Non -sharps
California
30 days once full
7 days from date of generation if
generating 20 or more pounds
per month
30 days from date of generation
if generating less than 20 pounds
per month
Florida
30 days once full
30 days from date of generation
Michigan
90 days from date of generation
90 days from date of Eeneration
All states
Dispose immediately if starts to
Dispose immediately if starts to
smell
I smell
Indoor RMW waste storage areas will be constructed of smooth, easily cleanable materials that are
impervious to liquids. Outdoor
storage of RMW is prohibited.
Biomedical Spill Clean -Up
If a biohazard spill is larger than you would typically handle or feel uncomfortable cleaning, or if
you need additional assistance, please call the 3E Company's Emergency 24-hour hotline at 1-888-
464-2960. Otherwise, Omnicare personnel should follow the spill clean-up procedure provided
below.
• RMW spills are to be cleaned up immediately or as soon as feasible by the pharmacist or
pharmacy intern determined to have occupational exposure.
• Isolate the affected area from foot traffic to prevent additional potential exposure.
• Determine and don the PPE to be used, depending on size and location of spill (At a
minimum, gloves must be worn).
• Sprinkle absorbent over the spill to absorb fluid. Scoop up waste material and any glass.
Never pick up glass with your hands.
4
