Although scales have been installed at both the Lovelace Transfer
Station and the Harney Lane Landfill, not all incoming waste is
weighed. Only larger vehicles are weighed, while smaller vehicles
are not. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate a conversion
factor to convert the cubic yard volume of non weighed waste to
tons. In developing this conversion factor, it is assumed that
waste delivered to the Lovelace Transfer Station in smaller
vehicles is similar in weight to the small vehicle waste at other
county sites. Thus, the actual conversion factor calculated for
the Transfer Station is applicable to other sites for similar
vehicle type non-weighed waste. This factor was calculated as
follows:
Total tons transferred from the LTS 1988. . . . . . . .113,705
Less: Weight of incoming weighed waste. . . . . . . . .. 77 ,732
Equals: Weight of non weighed incoming waste. . . 35,973
Divided: By CY volume of incoming
non weighed waste. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .140,354
Equals: conversion factor for cy to tons. . . . . . . .0.2563
Thus, the .2563 factor, or 513 pounds per cubic yard, is used in
this report to convert non weighed smaller vehicle type waste to
tons for the Foothill and Harney Lane Landfill.
ii
