WMU FU-06 November 2006
Forward Landfill Project No.021605.07
® CQA Monitor and signed by GSE prior to geosynthetic placement. Subgrade
acceptance forms are presented in Appendix E.
4.3 Clay Liner
A 2-feet thick clay liner layer was placed on the floor of WMU FU-06. Approximately
26,000 cy of material was utilized to construct the clay liner. The material was
transported from the clay stockpile located directly east of the cell using CAT 633
scrapers. The compaction of the liner soils was performed using a CAT 825
sheepsfoot compactor. As each lift was placed, the CQA Monitor observed that the
surface of the lift was scarified and not smooth to assure that no distinct layers
developed within the clay liner and that the specified lift thickness was achieved.
Vector's CQA Monitor performed in-place density tests during clay liner construction,
using the nuclear density gauge. The clay liner was placed at a minimum of 90
® percent of the maximum dry density at three to eight percent above optimum
moisture content, as determined by ASTM D 1557. Summaries of the field
moisture/density testing are included in Appendix D. The required testing
frequencies and number of tests taken are presented in Table 1.
Vector's CQA Monitor also performed moisture-density relationship (ASTM D-1557)
tests, Atterberg limits (ASTM D-4318) and grain size distribution (ASTM D-422)
tests on the clay liner material during placement.
Atterberg Limits and Grain Size Analysis of Clay Liner Soils: The CQA testing for
the clay liner soils consisted of performing testing for Atterberg limit (ASTM D-
4318), sieve analysis (ASTM D-422), and sieve wash (ASTM D-1140), at a frequency
of one per 2,500 cy. In addition, visual soil descriptions and soil classifications were
performed on the samples collected for Atterberg limit and sieve analysis. Twenty
is (20) sieve analyses and Atterberg limit tests were performed. A summary of the
Vector Engineering, Inc. • 143E Spring Hill Drive•Grass Valley,CA 95945•(530)272-2448
-13-
