nonwoven geotextiles. The bentonite shall be a high quality, natural sodium
bentonite composed of a minimum of 90 percent montmorillonite, by dry
weight, when tested with X-ray diffraction methods.
2. The GCL shall be internally reinforced through a process such as needle
punching through the top and bottom layers of geotextile and the bentonite.
The reinforcing fibers shall be a polypropylene thread. The tensile strength
of the fibers shall not be affected by hydration with water.
3. Prior to packaging the finished product, the manufacturer shall inspect each
roll, over the entire surface area, for the presence of sewing needles. All
needles shall be removed or the rolls shall be rejected.
4. The bentonite will be adhered to the backing material in a manner that
prevents it from being dislodged when transported, handled, and installed in
a manner prescribed by the manufacturer. The water content of the
bentonite shall not be greater than eitherl2 percent, by weight, or the initial
moisture content measured at the time of passing conformance shear
strength tests.
5. The interfacial and internal shear strength of the side slope liner system will
be tested per ASTM D6243 and ASTM D5321 to post -peak conditions.
Post -peak conditions are defined as the point at which the applied shear
force remains constant with increasing shear displacement. The minimum
post -peak shear displacement shall be 3 inches. In testing, upper or lower
boxes can be interchanged depending on the type of equipment. Submit,
one each, 6"x6" coupons of geomembrane and GCL from the rolls of
material that were used for each test. Testing shall be performed such that
orientation of materials being tested (i.e. which side is up) is consistent with
orientation of installation in the field.
a. The QA/QC CONSULTANT shall perform the shear strength testing
per ASTM D6243 for the proposed liner system components (GCL
vs. geomembrane and protective operations layer soil) in accordance
with the following:
1) Measure initial moisture content of the bentonite component of the
GCL.
2) Measure the asperity of the geomembrane [GRI GM -12].
3) Hydrate GCL under 125 psf normal stress for 20 hours with distilled
water.
4) Anchor lower geotextile component of site-specific GCL to lower
shear box. The upper geotextile component of GCL shall not be
anchored to the box. The GCL test shall be assembled the same way
as the materials will be deployed in the field.
5) Spray upper surface of GCL with water.
Forward Landfill WMU FU -06 5 GEOSYNTHETIC CLAY LINER (GCL)
02777
