v
J
1
T'
5.1 General Description of Activities
The geosynthetics components of WMU FU -10 consisted of geosynthetic clay liner (GCL), single -side
textured (SST) and double -side textured (DST) 60 -mil HDPE geomembrane; geocomposite; cushion
and filter geotextiles, geocomposite and geogrid. The installation and associated CQA provided for
each of these components are discussed within the following sections.
5.2 Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL)
5.2.1 General
The GCL product used in the construction of WMU FU -10 was Bentomat DN, manufactured by
Cetco. This type of GCL material consists of granular bentonite encapsulated by two non -woven
geotextiles.
5.2.2 GCL Manufacture and Delivery
5.2.2.1 Receiving Inspection
No GCL was delivered during construction of FU -10. The GCL used was from FU -08 construction.
Ausenco Vector CQA did inspect the GCL in storage; the rolls were stacked 3 high on pallets and
covered by a heavy plastic tarp. Ausenco Vector CQA verifies that the GCL was in acceptable
condition, still in the original factory plastic wrapping, with no evidence or indication of hydration. A
list of the rolls used on the northern slope areas of FU -10 and the original inventory with MQC
documentation can be found in Appendix H
5.2.2.2 GCL Conformance Testing
The conformance testing on the GCL was performed during FU -08 construction. Conformance
testing included tests for:
bentonite mass per unit area (ASTM D-5993);
® hydraulic conductivity (ASTM D-5084);
® peel strength (ASTM D-4632, modified for 180 degree peel of GCL); and
interface shear strength.
One sample of GCL was collected from roll #7244 for interface friction tests.
Interface shear testing was conducted for the GCL/geomembrane/geocomposite interface. Results
of the conformance testing indicated that the materials met the requirements of the project
specifications. A summary of the conformance test results is presented in Table 7. Detailed test
results, including the GCL interface tests, are provided within Appendix H.
Date: October 2010
USVC0004800
Final Construction Quality Assurance Report
15
