Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
• and TICE were measured above their PQLs in samples from both domestic wells and
DCDFM was also measured above the PQL in the sample collected from well 8106-A.
Estimated trace concentrations of two VOCs were also measured in the sample
collected from well 8106-A and one VOC was also measured at an estimated trace
concentration in the sample from well 7898-A.
3.1.8 Vadose Zone Monitoring
The current vadose-zone monitoring network at the Austin Unit consists of seven
lysimeters. The lysimeter locations are shown on Figure 2-1. As recorded in the field
notes for lysimeters (Appendix Q and summarized on Table 2-5, all Austin Unit
lysimeters were reported dry, and as a result, no soil-pore liquid samples were collected
during the current monitoring period. GLA and Forward are currently preparing a status
report for the unsaturated zone monitoring system that will include a workplan to
evaluate restoration of the vadose zone monitoring points.
3.1.9 Leachate/Surface Impoundment Monitoring
For the Austin Unit, leachate sumps and surface impoundments are inspected weekly by
Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump, it is pumped into the
surface impoundment WMU F (West) for evaporation. During the first quarter 2014,
• leachate was observed at holding areas WMU FU-03, WMU FU-04, WMU FU-05, WMU
FU-06, WMU FU-10, and WMU FU-13. Leachate logs summarizing the total flow and
flow rate are presented in Appendix A. For surface impoundment WMU-F (West)
Freeboard ranged from approximately 8.17 to 8.42 feet during the first quarter 2014
monitoring period. Appendix A presents copies of the freeboard observation logs and
Dissolved Oxygen measurements.
Leachate samples were collected on a quarterly basis and analyzed in the field for pH,
specific conductance, temperature, and turbidity. The results of quarterly field
monitoring measurements for the first quarter 2014 are presented in Table 3-7.
3.1.10 Surface Water Monitoring
Site run-on and run-off control facilities are designed to effectively channel surface
water to site stormwater/sedimentation ponds. According to the Operations Manager,
there were no discharges to surface water (waters of the United States) during the
reporting period. Surface water monitoring stations ASW-1 (upstream) and ASW-2
(downstream) were reported dry during the first quarter 2014 monitoring period.
3.1.11 Groundwater Treatment Facility Operations
• The Groundwater Treatment Facility (GTF) at the Austin Unit has been operational since
1994 to mitigate impacts from landfill releases. Impacted groundwater is extracted
M:\2014.0012\FA_1Q14.docx 12
4/28/2014,Rev.0
