Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
0 4.4 Forward Unit
4.4.1 Groundwater
Groundwater elevations measured during the 2014 monitoring year were variable,
reflecting seasonal precipitation patterns. The variable pattern in groundwater
elevations in 2014 mimics annual patterns over the monitoring history. Hydrographs
depicting historical groundwater elevations are presented in Appendix G and indicate
generally static trends with some declines over the past two years. During the 2014
monitoring year, the groundwater flow direction beneath the Forward Unit varied with
a hydraulic gradient ranging from 0.001 ft/ft to 0.003 ft/ft. In the northeast corner of
the site, groundwater was noted to flow south-southwest at a hydraulic gradient of
0.010 ft/ft during the first and second quarters. The south-southwest gradient was first
noted during the May 2011 monitoring event and is believed to be related to
groundwater mounding as a result of landscape irrigation at the entrance of the landfill.
However, regionally the groundwater gradient is to north and northeast toward the
Austin Unit.
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Forward Unit during the 2014 monitoring
year are generally similar to those observed in previous monitoring years. Although
several CL exceedances were noted, none of the CL exceedances were consistently
exceeded over the 2014 monitoring year. The following table summarizes inorganic CL
exceedances during the 2014 monitoring year.
Forward Unit CL Exceedances for 2014 Monitoring Year
Inorganic Constituents
Well
Constituent
2014 Monitoring Period(s) CL
was Exceeded
Mw -1
Calcium, Potassium,
3`
Strontium
MW -2A
Sodium
3`
MW -3
pH
2"
MW -10
Calcium, Potassium,
3`
Strontium
MW -13
Potassium, Sodium,
3`
Strontium
MW -14
Nitrate
1St & 2"
MW -15
Calcium, Potassium,
3`
Sodium, Strontium
MW -17
TDS
2"
Calcium
3`
MW -19
Calcium, Magnesium
3`
MW -23R
pH
2"
MW -24*
Sulfate
1St & 3`
Notes: * - Background Well.
M:\ 2014.0012\FA_4Q14.docx 15
1/28/2015, Rev. 0
