2.2 GENERAL EARTHFILL
A. General Earthfill material shall be used where indicated on the Construction
Drawings and for the construction of anchor and termination berms and to bring
subgrade to required grade where no other material is specified. The material
shall be obtained from onsite excavations or stockpiles and shall be free from
roots, organic matter, trash, debris, rocks or clods larger than 3 inches, and other
deleterious materials.
B. The top 3-inches of General Earthfill that will be overlain by geosynthetics shall
not contain particles greater than 1/2-inch or any materials that may protude from
the surface that could puncture the overlying geosynthetics.
2.3 CLAY LINER
A. A natural clayey material free from roots, organic matter, frozen material, debris,
solid waste, rocks, or slag larger than 1 inch, and other deleterious materials.
B. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall selectively excavate suitable clay liner
material from the onsite borrow sources. The clay liner material shall be first
obtained from the eastern onsite borrow source until a sufficient amount of
material has been obtained or there is no suitable clay liner material remaining.
Clay liner material shall then be obtained from the northern onsite borrow source.
C. The Clay Liner material shall have similar characteristics to the clay material used
in the sealed double ring infiltrometer testing (see OWNER for SDRI test results).
It shall have a soil classification of clayey sand (SC), lean clay, sandy clay, or
silty clay (CL), or fat clay or sandy clay (CH), using the Unified Soil
Classification System and shall meet the following requirements:
1. Particle Size: Material having 100 percent by weight passing 1-inch sieve,
90 percent by weight passing U.S. No. 4 sieve and at least 60 percent by
weight passing U.S. No. 200 sieve. The maximum in-place dry clod size
shall be 1 inch.
2. Liquid Limit: 25 minimum to 60 maximum.
3. Plasticity Index: 10 to 40.
4. Field Hydraulic Conductivity: Maximum hydraulic conductivity of 1 x 10-
cm/sec measured using a sealed double ring infiltrometer(SDRI). An SDRI
for the clay liner material has been performed and the results may be
obtained from the OWNER.
5. Laboratory Hydraulic Conductivity: Maximum hydraulic conductivity of
3.1 x 10"8 cm/sec (based on correlation to maximum field hydraulic
conductivity; see existing SDRI test results).
Forward Landfill WMU FU-14
02300 5 EARTHWORK
