earthwork and geosynthetic materials at his sole expense. All Work
performed to repair and replace materials shall be performed in accordance
with the applicable Specifications sections.
B. Granular Drainage Material Placement:
1. The geomembrane lining underlying the GDM layer shall be inspected and
approved by the QA/QC CONSULTANT prior to placement of the GDM.
2. GDM shall be placed in a single continuous and approximately horizontal
lift unless otherwise specified or specifically permitted by the QA/QC
CONSULTANT.
3. Method of dumping and spreading materials shall ensure uniform
distribution of the material and prevent damage to the underlying
geomembrane lining.
4. Layer thickness shall be as shown on the Construction Drawings. Do not
operate placement equipment over the geomembrane lining with less than
12 inches of granular drainage materials in place.
5. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall use low ground pressure
equipment to place the granular drainage material. A minimum thickness of
1 ft of material is required between a low ground pressure dozer (such as a
wide pad Caterpillar D-4 bulldozer or equivalent) and an underlying
geomembrane. A minimum thickness of 3 ft of material is required between
rubber-tired vehicles and underlying geosynthetics. In areas of heavy
vehicle traffic, such as access ramps, the material thickness should be at
least 3 ft. In any case, the following table shall be complied with during
construction:
Maximum
Equipment Ground Pressure Initial Lift Thickness
(psi) (ft)
<5 0.5
5 1.0
10 1.5
20 2.0
>20 >3.0
6. EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR is responsible for repairing any
geomembrane lining material damaged during GDM placement at no cost to
the OWNER.
7. After completion of the GDM layer, construction traffic shall be minimized
to that absolutely necessary for placement of the overlying geotextile and
Protective Operations Layer. No vehicles used for transporting the GDM or
coarse gravel from the borrow source shall be allowed on top of the placed
and compacted GDM layer except in areas where a minimum 12-inches of
protective operations layer and geotextile have been placed above the GDM.
Forward Landfill WMU FU-14
02300 21 EARTHWORK
