Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
® 3.1.8 Vadose Zone Monitoring
The current vadose-zone monitoring network at the Austin Unit consists of seven
lysimeters. The lysimeter locations are shown on Figure 3-1. As shown on Table 2-5A,
all of the lysimeters were reported dry during the second quarter 2015 monitoring
period.
3.1.9 Leachate/Surface Impoundment Monitoring
Leachate sumps and surface impoundments are inspected weekly by Forward Landfill
personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump, it is pumped into the surface
impoundment WMU F (West) for evaporation. During the second quarter 2015,
leachate was observed at holding areas WMU FU-03, WMU FU-04, WMU FU-05, WMU
FU-06, WMU FU-10, WMU FU-13, and WMU FU-14 and a total of 237,200 gallons of
leachate was removed from the lined areas at an average rate of 2,607 gallons per day.
For surface impoundment WMU-F (West) freeboard ranged from approximately 5.25 to
6.33 feet during the second quarter 2015 monitoring period. Appendix A presents
copies of the leachate observation logs, freeboard observation logs, and surface
impoundment monitoring log.
Leachate samples were collected on a quarterly basis and analyzed in the field for pH,
specific conductance, temperature, and turbidity. The results of quarterly field
monitoring measurements for the second quarter 2015 are presented in Table 3-7.
3.1.10 Surface Water Monitoring
Site run-on and run-off control facilities are designed to effectively channel surface
water to site stormwater/sedimentation ponds. According to the Operations Manager,
there were no discharges to surface water during the reporting period. On May 26,
2015, surface water monitoring stations ASW-1 (upstream) and ASW-2 (downstream)
were reported dry.
3.1.11 Corrective Action Monitoring
The Groundwater Treatment Facility (GTF) at the Austin Unit has been operational since
1994 to mitigate impacts from landfill releases. Impacted groundwater is extracted
from four wells (EW-1, EW-2, EW-3R, and EW-4) that pump groundwater through an air
stripper treatment system to remove VOCs. Treated groundwater is discharged to an
infiltration pond (constructed in 2003) north of the Austin Road Unit of the Forward
Landfill. During the monitoring period, Herst and Associates (2015) calculated that the
GTF treated 11.0 million gallons of groundwater and removed approximately 0.89
pounds of VOCs. Details regarding corrective action remediation system operations and
performance evaluation for the second quarter 2015 are presented in Appendix C.
M:\2015.0014\FA 2Q15.docx 12
7/31/2015,Rev.0
