Mr. liuljurl;ahrutnuk, PUJAILy CUMILy burvuyur
Attachment No. 2
SCENIC DRIVE AND OAKDALE ROAD
TELEPHONE 526-6654
Thls letter is a follow-up to our conversation of May 24, 1976, concerning
soils developed into orchards in Stanislaus County. There are about 20,000
acres of trees (almonds) and grapes in eastern Stanislaus County developed
mostly upon Whitney and Rocklin soils,
These orchards and vineyards were planted in the early 1960s. The oldest
are 12 to 13 years old. The soils are 2 to 4 feet of sandy loam, quite
alupinv, underlain by softly coasulidated sediments. These softly consolidated
materials have been shattered by subtioiling, and permanent sprinklers in the
main havC been used to irrigate: these rolling lands. The oldest of these
orchards and vineyards are just maturing, We believe they will be moderately
long-lived,
The soils in eastern San Joaquin County (Qarvey Lane) are San Joaquin, Ramona
and Rocklin sandy loams. They have 1 to 3 feet of sandy loam, 2 to 12 inches
of clay and a medium consolidated layer at 2 to 4 feet. Because of the clay
layer, we have not recommended these soils be developed for orchards and
vineyards. We have suggested experiments with subsoilers and slip -plows, but
there is significant doubt that the San Joaquin and Ramona soils of San Joaquin
County will support long-lived orchard or vineyard crops.
Also, the cost of subsoiling (ripping) and permanent sprinklers has inflated
considerably in the last 2 to 5 years, causing these expensive developments to
slow down considerably. This is in addition to the grape and almond economic
outlook, A new "Irrigation Cost Study" is included to show 1976 development
costs.
Sincerely,
J. L.
