CENTRAL COUNTY AREA FRANCHISED COLLECTORS:
There are five cities in the Central County Area -
Stockton, Lathrop, Manteca, Ripon, and Escalon. About
40% of the population of the unincorporated area of the
County lives in the planning area of Stockton, the
County's largest city.
In the Central County Area, three refuse collection
firms are franchised to collect residential refuse in
the unincorporated area. Generally, Sunset Disposal
Services, Inc. , one of the Delta Container Corporation
companies, collects residential refuse in the area
around the City of Stockton. Gilton Solid Waste
Services, Inc. collects waste in the area around the
cities of Escalon and Ripon. Philco Disposal collects
residential waste in the area around Manteca and
Lathrop. The Cities of Ripon and Manteca provide
publicly operated refuse collection services.
The Stockton-based Delta Container Corporation has
a strong recycling operation through which it markets
corrugated and high-grade paper, newspaper, aluminum
cans, and glass. Through a related company, Delta Paper
Stock Company, it operates a large buy-back facility, as
well as several redemption centers in convenience zones
in and around Stockton. These centers serve both City
and County residents.
Delta Container Corporation also collects from
commercial and industrial customers in the
unincorporated area and operates a paper recycling
program that purchases paper from local recyclers.
Sunset Disposal, another Delta Container Corporation
company, did not conduct a curbside recycling program in
1990. However, Sunset did establish a pilot program in
1991. If successful, this program will probably be
extended to more of its service area.
Chapter 4 - Recycling 13
