3. County Recycling Activities:
iDISPOSAL SITES:
The County is recycling corrugated paper, tires,
and scrap metal including aluminum and white goods, at
its Lovelace Transfer Station. Space limitations at the
transfer station preclude a more extensive recycling
program at this time. There was a program at the
Harney Lane Landfill to divert scrap metal, white goods,
wood, and tires in 1990 and 1991. However, that
landfill was closed by the end of 1991.
The County's new North County Recycling Center and
Sanitary Landfill began operation in the Fall of 1991
and replaced the Harney Lane Sanitary Landfill. The
Recycling Center, scheduled for completion by the second
quarter of 1992, will have drop-off facilities for
several recyclable materials. Also manual separation of
recyclable materials will be conducted on the tipping
floor.
Plans are being developed for the renovation of the
County's Lovelace Transfer Station, which will have
similar recycling capabilities.
INSTITUTIONAL RECYCLING:
The County operates an office paper recycling
program at eight of its facilities. The program which
began in January, 1990, diverted 56 tons of computer and
white office paper in 1990. The program can be used as
a model for businesses in both cities and unincorporated
areas of the County.
During 1990, all programs within the County
unincorporated area diverted 13,811 tons of recyclable
materials.
Chapter 4 - Recycling 17
