4. Recycling at Military Facilities:
There are 3 large military facilities in the
County. One of them, the Tracy Army Defense Depot, is
in the unincorporated area. It has an active diversion
program and collects corrugated paper, wood, and tires.
However, no recycling credit was claimed for tires for
1990 because the facility didn't report the method used
to recycle tires.
During 1990, military facilities diverted 866 tons
of waste from the unincorporated County.
5. Recycling by Business and Industry:
Businesses and industries continue to contribute to
waste diversion by reusing or recycling materials that
would otherwise end up in sanitary landfills. For
example, some wood users recycle shavings and sawdust as
a soil amendment, or as animal bedding which can later
be composted. Others offer the wood to residents for
their fireplaces. Agricultural businesses often use
waste food products as animal feed, soil amendments, or
fuel.
E. Local Market Development Activities:
The County's procurement program to encourage market
development for recycled products was described in Section
II.B of this chapter.
F. ]Economic Development Activities:
The County is actively seeking businesses, including
Chapter 4 - Recycling 18
