Sanitation Company, a Delta Container Company, was begun by
a creative employee hired to initiate recycling education in
the schools. She has won recognition for inventing the
character, Granny Garbage, who brings the recycling message
to 6th graders in and around Stockton as part of a
comprehensive recycling curriculum. Both of these
educational programs are available to the schools in the
unincorporated area served by the two companies.
V1. Evaluation of Recycling Program Alternatives:
Following is a discussion of the recycling program
alternatives which were studied by the County for possible
inclusion in its recycling program. The alternatives include
curbside collection, drop-off centers, buy-back centers and mobile
collection for recycling from the residential waste stream, and
source separation or manual or mechanical separation for recycling
from the commercial and industrial waste streams. Salvage
programs at solid waste disposal facilities would involve the
entire waste stream.
A. Residential Recycling: Curbside Collection, Drop-Off, Buy-Back, and
Mobile Buy-Back Centers:
PROGRAM DISCUSSION:
Recycling from the residential waste stream and from the
residential portion of the self-haul waste stream is best
done using source separation. Several alternatives for
diverting recyclable materials exist when homeowners separate
recyclables from their trash. The alternatives include
curbside recycling, buy-back centers, drop-off centers, and
mobile collection programs.
Chapter 4 - Recycling 20
