[a <br />C. <br />[a <br />unincorporated areas and added them to the existing <br />composting project. In 1989 the leaves were windrowed <br />and left to decompose with minimal management. The <br />windrows were turned once after they were formed, and the <br />composted material, along with the leaves collected in <br />the fall of 1990 were taken by a local waste hauler for <br />an existing composting program. <br />The only private composting program involving <br />material from the unincorporated area is being carried <br />out by a private hauling company. In that program, <br />leaves are composted with vineyard and winery wastes. <br />The resulting compost is sold locally to residents and <br />businesses. <br />Quantity of Waste Being Composted: <br />In 1990, the County and private composting programs <br />diverted approximately 2,124 tons of leaves, cannery and <br />agricultural wastes from the unincorporated area. <br />Existing Composting Strategies which will Decrease in Scope: <br />There are no plans to discontinue any existing <br />composting activities in the County during the short-term <br />or medium-term planning periods. <br />Local Market Development Activities: <br />There are no market development activities for <br />compost being pursued by the County at this time, since <br />the jurisdiction has not yet put a significant composting <br />program into operation. <br />Chapter 5 - Compost 4 <br />
