County has determined that special wastes are adequately
handled within the County and pose no unusual or unmitigatable
hazards. Therefore, no new programs are required during the
short or medium term planning periods.
This component deals with current diversion programs for
special wastes that were identified by the Waste Generation
Study as being disposed of at County landfills in significant
quantities, and were not discussed in other components. The
only waste diversion strategy recommended by this component is
continuation of current diversion programs. The special
wastes are the following:
1161 11,13
SPECIAL WASTE TYPES AND DIVERSION RATES - 19911,'
UNINCORPORATED COUNTY
WASTE TYPE
TONS
%
Scrap Metals
10,311
4.51
Inerts
64,127
28.04
Cannery Wastes
8,606
3.76
Abandoned Vehicles
332
0.15
Total Diversion
83,376
36.46
At this time, the County does not intend to count the
special wastes discussed in this component toward meeting its
waste diversion goals. Therefore, the special wastes are not
included in the calculations for the total waste stream as
presented in Table 2-9. However, the County reserves the
option to count these special wastes at a later date.
