CI
4. Agricultural Wastes:
The County unincorporated area is
predominantly agricultural, with fruit and nut
orchards, vineyards, dairies, vegetables and field
crops. The agricultural wastes coming to landfills
include orchard prunings and some crop wastes. Most
of the agricultural wastes are burned, under
permitted conditions, or processed for fuel. Such
transformation activities were discussed in the
Waste Generation Component.
5. Abandoned Vehicles:
The County contracts with three auto
wrecker/dismantler companies in three geographical
areas of the County to pick up abandoned vehicles.
The vehicles are compacted and taken to Oakland
where they are shredded. Abandoned vehicles are
therefore not a waste problem at the County
landfills nor do they pose any significant hazards.
Since these programs were in place in 1990,
and since scrap metals, including automobile parts,
were found in significant quantities in the waste
disposal stream, these diversion activities may be
counted toward diversion goals of the ACT. These
programs diverted 332 tons of material generated
within the unincorporated area of the County in
1990. This represents 0.15% of the entire solid
waste stream.
6. Large Dead Animals:
Some County landfills do accept large animal
carcasses. However, disposal at County sites is
Chapter 6 - Special Wastes 9
11
