11 <br />LJ <br />The California Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989 <br />(ACT) requires that a solid waste generation study be <br />performed by each jurisdiction. The study may be performed <br />individually or on a regional basis. <br />The study must quantify the solid waste stream according <br />to the following formula: <br />where: <br />- • 0 • . 11 • t •VI <br />it GEN = The total quantity of solid waste generated <br />within the jurisdiction. <br />DISP = The total quantity of solid waste, generated <br />within the jurisdiction, which is transformed <br />or disposed of in permitted solid waste <br />facilities. <br />DIVERT = The total quantity of solid waste generated <br />within the jurisdiction which is diverted from <br />permitted solid waste transformation and <br />disposal facilities through existing source <br />reduction, recycling, and composting programs. <br />Further, the waste is to be identified by waste category <br />and waste type, and by generation source within the <br />jurisdiction. The sources are to include residential, <br />commercial, industrial, and other. <br />By determining any two elements in the equation, the <br />third element can be derived.
