or food residues risk rejection. If loads are clean and
color sorted, the processor can use high percentages of
recycled cullet in production, but mixed cullet can only
make up about 10% of the feed stock, and contaminants
like ceramic or rock can result in shutting down a
furnace and landfilling its contents.
There is a strong market for aluminum cans, and as
a result, recycling rates are high. Other metals can be
recycled but market prices vary. Tin cans and other
scrap steel can be source separated or manually separated
at transfer stations or disposal sites but market prices
are low for this commodity. White goods bring poor
prices and most dealers require that they be stripped of
insulation, motors, refrigerant, and capacitors, since
those materials are either non-recyclable with the metals
or contain hazardous materials. Non-ferrous scrap metal
brings good prices but must be stored in locked
containers to prevent theft.
The unincorporated area is currently doing very
little with yard waste which can be composted. Residents
can compost yard waste in back yards. However, for an
effective program, yard waste should be collected
separately at the curbside and composted by the County.
It is unrealistic to expect to sell all of the compost
that can be produced, but it should be possible to use it
for County landfills and for State and County park and
road projects, and to offer it for sale to the public and
the agricultural community.
Wood constitutes a significant portion of the
commercial, industrial, and self-haul waste streams and
is relatively easy to separate from other materials at
disposal sites. The current market for scrap wood is as
a fuel for industrial furnaces or co-generation
facilities, where it replaces virgin fuels.
The market for used tires is very limited and the
Chapter 2 - Waste Generation 20
