Yard Wastes:
The County will consider an ordinance requiring
the use of low maintenance landscaping materials that
produce less waste, for both residential and business
construction projects. The County will also provide
information to residents on backyard composting to
source reduce yard wastes.
This strategy was chosen because yard waste is a
substantial portion of the waste stream, and the least
costly approach to manage this material is to produce
less and to compost on site, resulting in less to be
collected for composting or disposal.
5. Institutional Paper Reduction:
The County will encourage source reduction
practices in its own offices including the use of
double-sided copying, routing of memos, and the re-use
of scrap paper.
This strategy was chosen to reduce the paper in
the waste stream and to serve as an example for area
businesses.
6. Procurement Policies:
The County Purchasing Department will be required
to reexamine its policies regarding requirements for
Chapter 3 - Source Reduction 27
