product durability, recyclability, reusability, and
recycled material content. The County Purchasing
Department currently has a policy to utilize materials
with recycled content where applicable, as discussed
in the recycling component.
This program was selected to reduce the waste
stream from County offices and to develop information
which can be shared with cities in the County as well
as area businesses.
7. Coordination:
The County will cooperate wherever possible with
the cities in the County, and with other cities and
counties to coordinate efforts in source reduction.
S. New Business Ordinance:
The County will develop an ordinance that
requires all new businesses to prepare and submit
Solid Waste Management Plans as part of the permitting
and licensing process. These plans will specify
source reduction, recycling, and other waste
diversionary practices that will be employed by the
business. The plans will also require evaluation and
specify the types of information which the business
must furnish to the county concerning its waste
diversion programs.
The business ordinance was selected to bring
waste reduction issues to the attention of businesses
in the planning stages so that source reduction
strategies can be integrated into the design of the
business. This program will also provide the County
with information on business recycling and source
reduction which might benefit other businesses.
Chapter 3 - Source Reduction 28
