D. Surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned and shall be free from oil, grease, <br /> dirt, dust, and other foreign substances. <br /> E. Removable items which are in place and are not to be painted shall either <br /> be removed or properly protected prior to surface preparation and painting. <br /> F. Painted galvanized surfaces shall be chemically etched per the <br /> manufacturer's recommendation prior to painting. <br /> 3.02 MATERIAL PREPARATION <br /> A. Paint shall be mixed each time any is withdrawn from the container to <br /> provide a mixture of uniform density. Paint containers shall be kept <br /> tightly closed except while paint is being withdrawn. <br /> B. Paint shall be factory mixed to proper consistency and viscosity for hot <br /> weather application without thinning. Thinning will be permitted by <br /> County only as necessary to obtain recommended coverage at lower <br /> _application temperatures. . In no case shall the wet film thickness of <br /> applied paint be reduced, by addition of paint thinner or otherwise, below <br /> the thickness recommended by the paint manufacturer. <br /> 3.03 PRHVENG <br /> A. In general, surfaces of equipment, steel, and cast iron are specified to be <br /> shop primed. Any surfaces which have not been shop primed, shop <br /> coatings which are damaged or have failed and have been determined <br /> unsuitable by the Engineer, shall be removed and the surfaces field <br /> primed. Galvanized, aluminum, stainless steel, wood, and insulated <br /> surfaces shall be field primed. Surfaces specified to be field painted with <br /> clear finish coats need not be primed. <br /> B. Edges, comers, crevices, welds, and bolts shall be given a brush coat of <br /> primer before the specified spot or touchup painting of metal surfaces. <br /> Special attention shall be given to filling crevices with paint. <br /> C. Abraded and otherwise damaged portion of shop-applied paint shall be <br /> cleaned and repainted as recommended by the manufacturer of the finish <br /> coating. Welded seams and other uncoated surfaces,heads and nuts of field- <br /> installed bolts, and surfaces where paint has been damaged by heat shall be <br /> given a coat of specified primer.
