r <br />1 <br />D. The Contractor whall use extra care when drilling the bottom 10% of the <br />hole to avoid damaging the landfill liner. The Contractor shall not drill <br />deeper than shown on plans. At the first sign of soil below this depth or end <br />of waste, the Contractor shall stop drilling and immediately alert the <br />Engineer. The Contractor shall backfill and seal the borehole with bentonite <br />pellets or flakes three (3) feet deep and hydrate with adequate clean water if <br />so directed by the Engineer. Payment shall be based on the maximum depth <br />reached prior to backfilling with bentonite, provided the depth was less than <br />or equal to the depth shown on the Contract Drawings or as requested by the <br />Engineer. <br />E. Notify the Engineer if water is encountered during drilling, the Engineer will <br />advise the Contractor as to whether drilling is to continue, or whether the <br />well will be constructed or abandoned. If the well is to be constructed, the <br />Engineer may direct the Contractor to seal the borehole by placing a <br />bentonite seal to five (5) feet above the water, if so directed. The Contractor <br />shall then complete the well starting from the top of the seal. The <br />Contractor shall be paid for the maximum depth drilled for usable holes, <br />provided that the depth is less than or equal to the depth shown on the <br />Contract Drawings or as requested by the Engineer. <br />F. If a well is not completed by the end of the day and is to be left open, the <br />Contractor shall cover the borehole by placing heavy plywood or steel <br />plate over the opening, lowering his auger over the top of the cover, and <br />sealing the edges of the cover with soil. The Contractor shall post warning <br />signs and shall cordon off the area with safety ribbon and barricades. At <br />all times, the Contractor shall be responsible in enforcing the Health and <br />Safety requirements and secure the construction area. <br />G. The last 10 feet of backfill material above the lower bentonite seal shall be <br />compacted firm and unyielding. The material shall be placed in maximum <br />one foot lifts and compacted. Well backfill compaction shall be <br />completed using a pneumatic compactor. <br />H. Contractor is responsible for all equipment (i.e., drill bits, pipe, tools) left <br />in abandoned boreholes. <br />3.02 DISPOSAL OF REFUSE <br />A.
