1.04 COMPACTION AND MOISTURE TESTING <br />' A. Compaction shall be established by the compaction test procedures prescribed in <br />ASTM Designation D-1557. <br />' B. Soil testing shall beF erformed by an independent accredited testing laboratory <br />' employed by the County of by the County's testing laboratory. <br />C. The Contractor is to cooperate with the soil laboratory in allowing tests and <br />' following recommendations as to whether areas have or have not met compaction <br />criteria acceptable to the County. <br />' D. The County shall employ and pay for compaction and moisture testing in <br />completed trenches. <br />E. If compaction or moisture testing fails, retesting will be performed by the County <br />at the Contractor's expense. <br />PART 2 MATERIALS <br />2.01 BENTONITE <br />A. Where called for on the plans, bentonite/soil mix shall consist of at least 10 <br />percent bentonite by dry weight. The soil material shall not contain rocks greater <br />than 1/2 inch in any dimension. Bentonite in bentonite soil mix shall be powder <br />or 8 -mesh ("crumbles" or "kitty litter").— k,, w� � [� �3� \5v << <br />2.02 EXCAVATED SOILS l <br />A. Excavated soils from the trenching operations may be reused as trench backfill <br />provided the following: <br />' 1. The excavated backfill soil is clean, odorless, free of vegetation, refuse or <br />any other deleterious material and to the satisfaction of the Engineer. <br />2. The backfill material shall beP <br />laced at 0-3% above optimum moisture <br />P <br />' content and compacted as specified herein. <br />3.
