Waste is placed within the working area until the end of the day, when the refuse is covered with tarps or soil. If the maximum local height is reached during the day, as indicated by the laser receiver in the equipment, then soil cover is placed over the refuse at that final elevation, and refuse placement is begun at an adjacent area, also with the top of the lift guided by laser. Large and bulky wastes are separated to prevent bridging of the surrounding refuse. These items are placed in the lower portion of the advancing lift, and crushed by compacting equipment. Temporary soil berms are constructed where needed to intercept and divert surface runoff water away from the working face. 6.4 COVER 6.4.1 Cover Materials Daily and intermediate cover is provided from soil excavated from the area of the next planned Module or from the stockpile on site (Plate 2 and Appendix K). Imported soil is not used at this time. Soil cover is placed with the use of scrapers or other appropriate equipment. Scrapers haul soil from the borrow area to the working face at the end of a workday to cover refuse not covered by synthetic tarps. If there is an increased workload, soil may be stockpiled for use early in the morning. Other equipment may be used as needed. Although the scrapers may directly cover the waste with the soil, dozers are also used to spread the soil over the waste. Other equipment may be used. Soil is moved directly from the borrow area to the working face in dry weather. Preparations for wet weather include placing a soil stockpile near the active face, thereby minimizing travel distance over muddy surfaces. 6.4.2 Daily Cover Waste is covered with a minimum 6 inches of compacted soil or ADC tarps at the end of each operating day to control vectors, fires, odor, blowing litter, and scavenging.
