Growersamay deliver triple -rinsed, punctured agricultural containers free of charge to the landfill
40 where they are compacted and removed from the site to recycling processes elsewhere.
Compaction and handling areas on site are selected to provide sufficient room for this activity.
Previously, the delivery areas were located on flat areas in the vicinity of the active landfill face.
7.5.4 Household Hazardous Waste
A portion of the Recycling Center drop-off Area is used for receipt of recyclable Household
Hazardous Waste, such as used batteries, latex paint, waste oil, antifreeze and other non-RCRA
hazardous waste. Each of these materials is staged on site until removal by a commercial
recycler or licensed hazardous waste hauler. These materials are not disposed at the site.
Collection and the special waste handling practices below may be adjusted or discontinued as
needed to meet the needs of customers or regulatory compliance.
Latex paint is usually combined in 55 -gallon drums and stored on pallets for transport by a
licensed hazardous waste hauler to a local paint recycler. The recycler re -processes the paint
and returns some of it in 5 -gallon buckets for resale at the Recycling Center.
Anti -freeze is collected into a 55 -gallon drum and removed regularly by a commercial recycler.
Waste motor oil is collected into a 1,000 -gallon dual alarm, dual walled, tank, and removed
regularly by a commercial recycler.
Oil filters are stored in a 55 -gallon drum and removed by a commercial recycler.
Automotive batteries are stored on pallets, and transported by a commercial recycler when a
sufficient amount of automotive batteries is collected.
7.5.5 Electronic Waste
Cathode ray tubes (CRTs) and Universal Waste Electronic Devices (UWEDs), are temporarily
staged near self -haul disposal parking spaces 1 and 2 (Plate 21). Once a pallet -full of CRTs or
UWEDs is collected, they are stacked on pallets and shrink-wrapped. The pallets are stored in
North County RC&SL Page 59 of 69 Public Works/Solid Waste
Joint Technical Document County of San Joaquin — February 10, 2010
