iNI I1t0`1TNTAL SETTING
GENERAL
The proposed project , F-W- Cattle Co , is located along
the western boundary of Calaveras County in the lower-foot-
hill regions of the Sierra Nevada Mountains . Until recently,
the area was made up of relatively large cattle ranches which
also supported some dry-farrrning, some irrigated pasture and
occasional orchards . 1Cithin the last ten years some of the
larger land holdinms have been divided up into acreage home-
sites ( ap . endix V) . Cattle and sheep ranching remain the major.
land use by acreage ) for lands surrounding the project site
in Calaveras County.
Immediately across the boundary in San Joaquin Count}' exist
extensive wal_nat orchards ( see Map 2 ) . Although the proposed
project is restricted to Calaveras County, and although this
report is prepared under Calaveras County direction, the env: r-
onmental set ting for this project must include a portion of
San Joaquin County. '
CULTURAL HI STOk1'
( see appendix XII for report ) One processing and gather-
in site established by an historic group of ;','i. I'Jok Indians
remains relatively undisturbed on the J . B. Ranch property .
Pane cattle have created some disturbance over the site through
compaction and disruption of native vegetation. This site is
being recorded with the State Department of Parks and Necrea-
tion as an Archeolpaical Site .
_, , .."'Ir. :
Although nearby Jenny Lind was the site of extensive
placer mining, there appears to be no record of that same
r.ajnr mining operation near the J . R. Manch . Around 1945 , how-
'*V17r, a man by the name of Ed Matchell did some "doodlebug"
raining in an area on the ranch.
The first ranch in the project area was probably estab-
4 : shed around 1870 by a man named Lisenbv. Around 1900 it Nras
3 •UEIA by Shank and then in 1939 by 1!ilton Gill who recently
to the present ownership.
The project site lies on gently sloping grassland which
from the flnnri rlgi„ ^f Indi „ r t ,
a.. „I . all 170 Ft . eleva-
northeastward to gentle hilltnps of about 260 Ft. . elevation .
than one third of the actual project site ( area within
Calaveras County) is a flat alluvial flood plain . The remain-
" - acreage consists of residual soils developed from the under-
Sandstones and siltstones of the Valley Springs formation . _
