KI_EINFELDER
3 BACKGROUND
Background information on the Lodi Vintners facility was obtained from previous
RWQCB documents provided to Kleinfelder by Lodi Vintners and interviews with Mr.
Tyson Rippey, Vice-President of Lodi Vintners, Inc. According to the documents and
Mr. Rippey, Lodi Vintners has conducted grape crushing and juice storage at the
Acampo facility since 1991. Approximately 3,000 tons of grapes are crushed at the
facility annually. Primary operations are conducted between early August through late
October. The grape juice is chilled and stored in tanks (3.5 million gallons capacity)
prior to transportation to other facilities. Solids generated by the crushing are removed
by settling, aided by mechanical pressing and a desludging centrifuge. The grape
pumice, leaves, and other organic matter generated by the crushing are hauled off-site
as sufficient loads are generated and transported locally for use as fertilizer.
During the primary operational months, Lodi Vintners discharges a maximum of 50,000
gallons a day of wash water from the facility to four evaporation/percolation ponds. The
wastewater consists of effluent from washing equipment and grape juice storage tanks.
Cleaning agents include a 1% solution of chlorinated tri-sodium phosphate and calcium
hypochlorite solutions. The four ponds have an approximate storage capacity of 3.9
million gallons. During the non-operational season, the evaporation/percolation ponds
are used for storm water run-off collection.
Lodi Vintners, Inc received a Revised Monitoring and Reporting Program No. 93-112
and Request to Install Groundwater Monitoring Wells letter form the CVRWQCB, dated
February 1 , 2006. The letter stated that the Regional Water Board was updating the
Monitoring and Reporting Program (MRP) for Lodi Vintners Inc. to evaluate the impacts
of the waste discharge and determine if Lodi Vintners, Inc is in compliance with WDR
Order No. 93-112. Lodi Vintners Inc. existing MRP (Order No. 93-112) was issued
prior to current RWQCB groundwater monitoring requirements that have changed due
to the degradation of groundwater noted in association with other wineries using similar
wastewater disposal methods. Lodi Vintners requested that Kleinfelder prepare this
Monitoring Well Installation Workplan and Quarterly Groundwater Sampling and
Analysis Plan for submittal to the RWQCB.
67451.WP1/ST06R295/FB:Iv Page 4 of 14
©2006 Kleinfelder, Inc.
