Most arsenic that is absorbed into the body is converted by <br /> the liver to a less-toxic form that is efficiently excreted in the urine. Consequently, <br /> arsenic does not have a strong tendency to accumulate in the body except at high <br /> exposure levels. <br /> 4- The OSHA PEL is listed as 0.01 mg/m' for inorganic forms of arsenic and O.S <br />---} mg/m' for organic forms. <br /> 4- The CaVOSHA PEL is listed as 0.01 mg/m' for inorganic forms of arsenic and 0.2 <br /> mg/m' for organic forms. <br /> } <br /> m4 The TLV is listed as 0.01 mg/m' for arsenic and inorganic arsenic compounds. <br /> -' Inorganic arsenic has been recognized as a human poison since ancient times, and large <br /> doses can produce death. Lower levels of exposure may produce injury in a number of <br /> rt different body tissues or systems [i.e., systemic effects]. When taken by mouth, a <br /> common effect is irritation of the digestive tract, leading to pain, nausea, vomiting, and <br /> diarrhea. Other effects include decreased production of red and white blood cells, <br /> abnormal heart function, blood vessel damage, liver and/or kidney injury, and impaired <br /> nerve function causing a "pins-and-needles" feeling in the feet and hands. Inhalation <br /> exposure to inorganic arsenic dusts or fumes sometimes produces a pattern of skin <br /> abnormalities including the appearance of dark and light spots on the skin, and small <br />--} ..corns" on the palms, soles and trunk. Some of these corns may ultimately progress to <br /> skin cancer. In addition, arsenic ingestion has been reported to increase the risk of <br /> cancer inside the body, especially in the liver, bladder, kidney and lung. However, of <br /> much grater concern is the ability of inhaled arsenic to increase the risk of lung cancer. <br /> ' Direct dermal contact with arsenic compounds, frequently from inorganic arsenic dusts <br /> > in air, may result in mild to severe irritation of the skin, eyes, or throat. <br /> WARNING: Arsenic is known to the State of California to cause cancer. <br />- WARNING: Arsenic is known to the State of California to cause birth defects or <br /> J other reproductive harm. <br /> Cadmium <br /> Cadmium is a bluish-white metal used in electroplating, in nickel-cadmuim storage <br /> batteries, as a coating for other metals, in bearing and low-melting alloys, and as <br /> control rods in nuclear reactors. Cadmium compounds have numerous applications, <br /> including dyeing and printing textiles, as TV phosphors, as pigments and enamels, and <br /> J in semiconductors and solar cells. There are several reports of cadmium poisoning <br /> _a and human death. Cadmium can enter the body in inhalation of its dusts or fumes, or <br /> by ingestion. In humans the acute toxic symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, <br />_j headache, abdominal pain, muscular ache, salivation and shock.
