sb
9.7.5 Bees and Wasps
Symptoms: Bites from bees, hornets, wasps andyellow jackets may feel like getting
a shot. A small red area of raised skin surrounded by a whitish area
develops at the site of the sting. The area may feel a little bit hot and
may ache. It also may itch a lot. In most cases, the symptoms will be
gone in a few hours. Most people will have a normal reaction to these
stings. However some will have a local reaction, which include
abnormal amounts of swelling and pain. Around two out of every 100
people will have an allergic reaction to a bee sting. The symptoms of
an allergic reaction can include hives, tightness in the throat, nausea,
dizziness, along with difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, vomiting,
thick speech, confusion and other dangerous symptoms that can lead to
death.
Treatment: If you know you are allergic to bees, you should always carry what's
called an anaphylaxis kit withyou. These kits contain a dose or doses
of epinephrine. This drug may improve symptoms until you can get
emergency medical treatment. There are a couple of different types of
kits, andyou can get one withyour doctor's prescription.
9.7.6 Poison Oak:
Symptoms: If exposed, wash the affected area as Quickly as possible with soap and
cold water [hot water is reputed to cause the pores to open and allow
the oak oil in]. The oil is very easily spread, and can persist in
crystalline form on clothing or other contacted items [including pets]
for many months, soyou should wash anythingyou may have touched.
Scratching affected areas after symptoms develop cannot spread the
infection, but different levels of exposure, and secondary exposures,
can cause delayed reactions [2-3 days] in adjacent areas, giving the
impression of spreading.
Treatment: Wash the entire body and apply Tecnu as soon as possible.
9.7.7 Valley Fever
Symptoms: Mild symptoms typically include fever, aching, shills, sweats, fatigue,
cough and headache, which are commonly associated with the "flu".
Severe symptoms which include: a prominent fever and cough, skin
rashes; joint aches, especially those involving the knees.
