' 22 Soil and Groundwater-Grab Sampling and Analysis
On September 2, 8, anti 9, 1999, soil and groundwater-grab samples were collected from 11
locations using a Geoprobe® Direct-Push Technology rig (Geoprobe), to evaluate the
concentration and extent of any impacted soil and/or groundwater associated with the former
USTs and gasoline dispensing system The Geoprobe rig was operated by Fisch Environmental
(C-57 License#683865)
iOn September 2, 1999, four soil borings (SB-1, 2, 3, and 4) were drilled west, south and east of
the canopy and dispensers On September 8, 1999, two sod borings (SB-5 and 6)were drilled
' north of the canopy and dispensers and one soil boring (SB-7) was begun under the canopy and
between the two dispensers Soil boring SB-7 was continuously cored On September 9, 1999,
SB-7 was completed and four additional soil borings (SB-8, 9, 10, and 11) were drilled near the
' property boundaries The locations of the 11 soil borings are shown on Figure 2
The continuously cored sod boring (SB-7) was extended to a total depth of approximately 40 feet
bgs All of the non-continuously cored soil borings were terminated at approximately 25 feet
bgs, except for SB-3, 4, and 6 Soil boring SB-4 was extended to 30 feet bgs, and SB-3 and SB-
M6 were extended to 35 feet bgs
' From the continuously cored soil boring (SB-7), soil samples were collected for possible
laboratory analysis at depths corresponding to obvious changes in lithology or hydrogeology
From each of the ten other Geoprobe soil borings, discrete, undisturbed soil samples were
' collected at five foot intervals, beginning at five-feet bgs In the four distal soil borings (SB-8, 9,
10, and 11), soil samples were only collected from between 15 and 25 feet bgs A field geologist
logged all soil samples for hydrogeologic and lithologic characteristics according to the Unified
Soil Classification System and screened each sample for hydrocarbon vapors using a
photoionization detector (PID) Soil boring logs for each of the 11 soil borings are included in
Appendix C
' From each sod boring, a groundwater-grab sample was collected through dedicated and
disposable polyethylene tubing and a check valve Using an oscillating motion, groundwater
was pumped to the surface and into laboratory-supplied glassware Following the groundwater-
grab sampling, each of the soil borings was abandoned using a neat cement grout Each
borehole was filled with grout from the bottom using a tremae pipe
9
