3.0 HAZARD MITIGATION
3.1 AIIt MONITORING
General area air monitoring will be monitored for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using a Microtip
Photovac photoionization detector(PID)equipped with a 10.7 electron volt(eV)lamp. The instrument will
be calibrated each day per the manufacturers instructions prior to the commencement of field activities, and
a record will be kept of the calibrations and readings. The calibration log and air monitoring records log are
to be kept on Table 1 - Air Monitoring Equipment Calibration Log and Table 2 -Air Monitoring Records
Log,respectively.
If VOC concentrations in the sustained for... then...
breathin s ace ran e..
between 0 and 10 ppm any duration of time proceed with work monitoring as
necessary.
between 10 and 20 ppm for 1-5 minutes proceed with work monitoring every 5
minutes
for over 5 minutes 1.take short break to allow vapors to
desipate.
2. if situation allows, dampen soil with
water.
3.don respirator.
over 20 ppm for 1-5 minutes 1. proceed with work monitoring every 5
minutes.
for over 5 minutes 2.try to reduce vapors as listed above, don
respirator
3.don full-face respirator, if available.
4.measure benzene level with dreager
pump, if available.
5.contact project manager.
Ceres Associates Project CAS 19-2
Western Gravel Co.,Inc. 5 May 20, 1999
