3.2 PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
3.2.1 Protective Levels
The following Protective Levels are defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency(U.S.
EPA):
Level A•
■ The hazardous substance has been identified and requires the highest level of protection for skin, eyes, and
the respiratory system based on either the measured(or potential for)high concentration of atmospheric
vapors, gases, or particulates.
■ The site operations and work functions involve a high potential for splash, immersion, or exposure to
unexpected vapors, gases,or particulates of materials that are harmful to skin or capable of being absorbed
through the intact skin or substances with a high degree of hazard to the skin are known or suspected to
be present.
■ Skin contact is possible or total atmospheric concentrations on direct reading instruments indicate 500
parts per million(ppm)to 1,000 ppm of an unidentified atmospheric substances.
Type of Protection: Fully enclosed working environment ("moon suit"), with no exposed skin and self-
contained air supply.
Level B•
■ Should be worn when the type and atmospheric concentrations have been identified and require a high
level of respiratory protection but less skin protection or the atmosphere contains less than 19.5%oxygen
or total atmosphere concentrations on direct reading instruments indicate 5 ppm to 500 ppm of an
unidentified atmospheric substances.
Type of Protection: Skin is protected with chemical splash and fume resistant plastic coated coverall, and
supplied air is provided by air lines to a full-face respirator.
Level C•
■ Should be worn when the atmospheric contaminants, liquid splashes, or other direct contact will not
adversely affect or be absorbed through any exposed skin or the types of air contaminants have been
identified, concentrations measured, and an air purifying respirator is available that can remove the
contaminants or total atmospheric concentrations on direct reading instruments indicate 0 ppm to 5 ppm
of an unidentified atmospheric substances.
Type of Protection: Skin is protected with a cloth or paper coverall and air is filtered using either a half-face
or full-face respirator and appropriate air filter.
Level D•
■ Should be worn when the atmosphere does not contain chemical hazards, or work functions preclude
Ceres Associates Project CA519-2
Western Gravel Co.,Inc. 6 May 20,1999
