Nitrile gloves will be worn along with the latex outer glove during soil and water sampling to retard chemical
migration to the skin.
3.3 SITE CONTROL MEASURES
Site control measures are necessary to establish a work area, reduce the physical hazards, minimize the
transfer of hazardous substances to and from the work area, and limit the access of un-authorized,untrained
personnel. The following site control measures will be initiated on the job site:
■ The work area will be delineated by caution tape or other appropriate materials to create an exclusion
zone. Only authorized personnel equipped with the proper protective equipment will be allowed into this
zone. The size of the zone will be evaluated by the on-site health and safety officer based on his/her
observations of the possible limits of the hazard. For example, the exclusion zone should be large enough
to allow for drill rig mechanical malfunctions without injury to observer on the outside edge of the
exclusion zone.
■ Uncontrolled migration of hazardous materials including soil and/or groundwater potentially containing
hazardous materials is unacceptable. Soil and groundwater will be containerized in appropriate
Department of Transportation(DOT)approved drums, bins or other approved containers. If necessary,
a berm will be constructed to control the flow of potentially hazardous materials until they can be properly
containerized.
■ Slip, trip and fall hazards will be minimized. The work area floor and ground will be kept free of excess
material. If the ground or flooring is slippery, then measures to provide stable footing will be employed.
■ Consideration will be given to physical hazards such as being struck by, struck against,or being caught
in,on or between site materials, structures,or machinery. Individuals will remain clear of moving machine
parts unless their work requires them to be close to those parts.
■ Moving equipment or machinery will be required to have the necessary safety devices required by Cal-
OSHA.
■ The ambient temperature will be monitored and the necessary controls implemented to reduce employee
heat stress or chill.
3.4 ON-SITE HEALTH AND SAFETY BRIEFINGS
Prior to the commencement of each day of field activities, job site personnel are required to attend a Site-
Specific Health and Safety Meeting given by the Onsite Safety Coordinator. Items to be discussed include
but are not limited to the following:
Ceres Associates Project CA519-2
Western Gravel Co.,Inc. 8 May 20, 1999
