San Joaquin County
September 12, 2006
Site Health and Safety Plan: Bay will prepare a site health and safety plan to protect site workers.
The plan will be reviewed and signed by all site workers and kept onsite at all times.
Permits: Bay will obtain soil boring and monitoring well installation permits from San Joaquin
County before beginning field operations. A minimum of 48-hours notice will be given before the
field work requires scheduling a field person.
Soil Borings: Bay plans to advance four to five soil borings, using a truck-mounted or direct push
(Geoprobe)equipment using a licensed C-57 drilling contract to complete the proposed investigation.
The borings will be advanced with a truck-mounted and/or limited access direct push equipment to a
total anticipated depth of 50 feet below ground surface or groundwater.
During drilling, soil cores will be collected from each borehole for soil logging purposes using a 4-
foot long by 2-inch diameter core barrel sampler that contains a plastic liner for retaining relatively
undisturbed soil core. Soil samples will be collected at every 15 feet and/or significant lithologic
changes for lithologic description and possible chemical analysis.
Additional samples will be collected at the capillary fringe and at obvious changes in lithology. All
soil samples will be classified according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) by a
trained geologist or engineer working under the supervision of a California Registered Geologist. Soil
samples will be screened in the field for organic vapor by measuring head-space vapors with an
organic vapor meter (OVM). Exploratory boring logs will be prepared for each boring. Head-space
vapor measurements will be recorded on the logs.
Soil samples designated for chemical analysis will be retained in plastic liners or stainless steel tubes.
The tubes will be covered on both ends with Teflon sheets and plastic end caps. Grab water samples
will be collected from the borings as encountered. Grab water samples will be collected from the
borings using new, clean, dedicated disposable Teflon bailers attached to new, clean string. Sample
vials and bottles will be gently filled to overflowing and sealed so that no air is trapped in the vial or
bottle. Once filled, samples shall be inverted and tapped to test for air bubbles. Samples will be
contained in vials and bottles approved by the US EPA and the Regional Water Quality Control
Board. All samples will be labeled, entered onto a chain-of-custody record and placed into a cooler
with ice for transport to a State of California certified laboratory for analysis. It is anticipated that one
soil sample and one grab water sample for each boring will be obtained for analysis.
Drilling equipment and down-hole sampling equipment will be steam cleaned or washed in a solution
of non-phosphate detergent, double rinsed with tap water after each use and allowed to dry.
3
