CONTINGENCY PLAN
FIRE PREVENTION
Fire should not be a significant hazard since the feedstock of the poultry
manure contains a high percentage of moisture. The moisture content
should be maintained between 50 and 60 percent. The optimal temperature
is 125 to 140 degrees F. Temperatures are taken at random intervals along
the compost pile daily.
WATER SUPPLY
There are several large agricultural wells on-site which have plenty of water
pumping capacity to augment fire fighting efforts. These can also serve
along with fire extinguishers as the initial source of fire fighting capabilities
until the local Fire Department shows up. There is a well directly to the
north of the composting facility. This well has a 10 horse power pump on it.
Spontaneous combustion cannot be ruled out; therefore continuous daily
monitoring of the compost piles will take place and be documented.
POWER
S.K.S. receives their electricity from PG & E. There is a back up generator
on-site to maintain the facility incase of a power outage.
PERSONNEL
The compost facility is on the same site as the poultry operation. The
poultry facility is in operation 7 days a week therefore there will always be a
knowledgeable, properly trained, individual on-site to address an emergency
if one was to occur.
PERSONNEL TRAINING
Personnel working in the compost facility will be trained in the following
areas by qualified personnel.
Basic fire extinguisher lessons on how to use fire extinguishers and what
type of fire extinguishers are needed for a compost facility.
Maintenance of fire extinguishers, fire extinguishers will be checked to make
sure extinguishers are recharged before expiration dates. Recharging of fire
extinguishers will be carried out by a company that is licensed to carry out
this job.
