the appropriate PPE requirements can be approved by the Consulting safety
professional and implemented by the SSO. If corrective action cannot be
taken, field personnel and other individuals in the area must be directed to
move to a safe area. The SSO and Project Manager must also be contacted.
The consulting health and safety professional shall be responsible for
determining whether additional exposure monitoring/ sampling is needed to
supplement the equipment and methods described above. The SSO shall
monitor that the instruments are operated and interpreted only by persons
who have had prior training and experience in their operation, calibration
and care, and who understand their limitations. He shall also monitor that the
instruments are being properly calibrated, and that the calibration and proper
operation of the instruments are checked and documented periodically.
The OVA shall be calibrated both before and after field operations or as
deemed necessary during field operations. The instruments will be calibrated
directly to the type calibration gas used by the equipment manufacturer. The
calibration gas and the calibration readings (in ppm equivalent) shall be
recorded in the field logbook.
It should be noted that the OVA -FID hydrogen flame can extinguish in low
oxygen environments. In addition, high humidity environments can cause an
OVA -PID instrument to indicate lower organic vapor concentrations than
actuall
y exist.
Though collected by the SSO, the consulting health and safety professional
shall be responsible for interpreting monitoring data and upgrading or
downgrading the level of protection during field activities.
LEVEL
MEASURED BY
CALIBRATED
OVA
<10 ppm
10 ppm - 24 ppm
25 ppm - 99 ppm
ACTION.........
Continue OVA monitoring at specified
frequency and duration
Level Measured by Benzene Draeger Action
Tube Test
<1 ppm
>1 ppm
Respirators required.
100 ppm or 'Stop work personnel move out of area,
greater 'contact Project Manager.
