Instructions for Setting Up a New Waste Stream Bucket
1. If this is the first item of this color/waste stream, find the store's backup empty Hazardous Waste Bucket. The bucket should be
stored in the back room in a designated area. The hazardous waste bags should be stored in the same area as the bucket.
2. If the product is leaking any spilled chemical and absorbents must bagged (use two bags) before it is placed into a bucket. Put
enough absorbent material into the bag to soak up any free flowing liquid. Write the part number on the bag and secure bag with
a zip tie or tape.
If the product is not leaking, it may be placed directly into the proper color/waste stream bucket. Step 4 will help you determine
which waste stream should be identified on this bucket.
3. Review the Waste Stream Legend to identify the color of the most likely waste stream for the item.
4. Confirm the color choice by using the Part Number Map to validate you selected the right waste stream. The Part Number Map
will indicate the color of the correct waste stream.
5. Damaged chemical products must be sorted and stored correctly to avoid any potentially dangerous reactions. Only properly
trained store management team members can sort and label the Retail Waste Buckets. Products can have multiple hazardous
characteristics, such as an aerosol that is also highly flammable; so it is important to reference the Part Number Map to ensure
the chemical waste is sorted and stored correctly.
6. Print the appropriate Accumulation Start Date Label from the Retail Waste Bucket Program page in the Resources section of
TeamNet and adhere to the bucket with tape. The labels are color coordinated to coincide with a waste stream color.
o Green : Aerosols
o Red : Flammables
o Black : Acidic materials
o Blue : Alkaline materials
o Orange : Reactive products such as peroxides and other oxidizers
o Yellow : Soda Ash (California stores only)
If you have Black(Acidic),and Blue (Alkaline),buckets, they should NEVER be stored next to or on top of
one another. These two bucket types must be segregated to prevent any violent reactions if the products were to
intermingle.
An easy way to remember which buckets should be kept apart: "Although both Black and Blue begin with the letter B,
they cannot"B" stored together.
7. Write in the date the product was damaged and placed into the bucket on the label as this is the accumulation start date for this
waste stream. The contents of this bucket will be picked up by our authorized waste hauler.
8. Place your damaged/leaking item in the bucket and secure the lid. The lid must always be secured on the bucket except when
product is being added. Unsecured hazardous waste storage containers are one of the most frequently cited violations from
regulatory agency inspections. These violations are easily prevented by taking the few extra moments to secure the lid.
9. Log the item on the Damaged Product Log Form on your clipboard. Additional forms can be printed from eforms if needed.
10. A pick up should be requested by the DM once a store has 7 full buckets or approximately 100 pounds of waste. Your store
should have one empty bucket with lid on hand at all times- MS HAZ BUCKET and MS HAZ BUCKET LID-order these from
your servicing DC. (CA and MN stores in Anoka, Dakota, Hennepin, and Washington counties are automatically routed for
180 day service.)
11. Remove the item from Inventory based on how it was damaged. Instructions below.
Instructions for Adding Damaged/Leaking Chemicals to an Existing Waste Stream Bucket
