STRUCTURAL STEEL
Section 05100
15-1207
C. Structural steel to be fire proofed, all interior perimeter steel, steel that will be
inaccessible after erection, steel to receive high performance finish coatings and
slip critical bolted connection surfaces (finish painted or unpainted):
1.) Surface preparation: SSPC-SP3 Power Tool Cleaning.
2.) Apply Primer Type C, except as noted below.
d. Do not prime the following surfaces unless otherwise indicated:
1.) Connections to be field welded. Keep painted surfaces 2" away minimum.
2.) Steel in contact with or to be encased in concrete.
3.) Surfaces to receive welded metal decking.
4.) Galvanized Items.
5.) Slip critical bolted connections.
6.) Steel to be fireproofed.
e. Galvanize structural steel members exposed to weather and not finish painted, or
as otherwise indicated to receive galvanizing, to comply with ASTM A 123/A
123M. Provide minimum 2.0 oz/sq ft galvanized coating. Passivation agents are
not permitted on galvanized metal that is to be painted. Galvanize all bolts and
washers.
f. Field prime with Type B after connections are complete.
g. Do not finish work until inspection is complete and work approved by Testing
Agency.
2. Unpainted Surfaces: Remove oil and grease with solvent cleaners; remove dirt and
other foreign material by sweeping with wire brushes or other suitable means.
Thoroughly clean all steel to be encased in concrete.
3. Painted Surfaces: Do not paint when ambient temperature is below 40 degrees F.
Paint in dry weather or under cover. Clean off all loose mill scale, oil, rust, slag burned
material or foreign matter before painting. Avoid paint run, lap, sags or other defects in
exposed work. Apply paint by brush or spray over dry dust -free surfaces per
manufacturer's directions. Do not thin paint in excess of manufacturer's
Recommendations. Allow paint to dry before handling or shipment of structural steel.
E. Protect all materials, before and after fabrication, from rust, corrosion, dirt, grease and other
foreign matter.
F. Fabricate framing members free from twists or bends. Form holes, cut and sheared edges
neatly without kinks, burrs, or warped edges.
G. Exposed Steel: Straight, smooth, free of nicks, scars or dents.
3.03 WELDING
A. General:
1. For details of joints, comply with requirements for AWS joints accepted without
qualification tests.
2.
