LATH & PLASTER
Section 09200
15-1207
temperature is below 40 degrees F or is expected to fall outside this limit within 24 hours after
application. Protect base coats from freezing for at least 24 hours after installation.
B. Do not apply finish coat when ambient temperature is or will fall below 45 degrees F for 24
hours after application. Do not apply finish coat to brown coat that is wet, frozen or covered
in frost. Substrate shall be properly cured and dry per manufacturer's recommendation.
C. Protect base and finish coats from uneven and excessive evaporation in warm, windy
weather.
1.09 FIELD MEASUREMENTS
A. Make and be responsible for all field dimensions necessary for proper fitting and completion
of work. Report any discrepancies to Architect before proceeding.
1.10 TESTING & FIELD OBSERVATION
A. Lath and Plaster System Testing: The Work is subject to field observation and sampling by
the Owner's Consultant and Testing Lab. Testing may be waived by the Architect if
optional Pre -blended Plaster Mix is used by the installer, or if the correct field mix of
materials and proportions can be observed and documented by the project inspector.
If testing is determined to be necessary, the Owner will pay for the first tests of a single
wall and soffit sample. If the tests indicate that the sample(s) do not meet the
minimum requirements of the standards as referenced herein, all subsequent testing
(based on quantities described within these specifications) will be paid for by the
Contractor. The Contractor must provide safe access to the work areas and the information
necessary to accomplish such observation and sampling. Any information or assistance
offered by the Consultant or Testing Lab will not relieve the Contractor of the responsibility for
the work.
1. The Contractor is required to provide one 12 -inch square sample of the lath and plaster
system taken from the building wall for every 5000 square feet of wall area. In addition,
the Contractor will be required to take from the building soffit, at least one 12 -inch
square sample of the lath and plaster system from each building. All sample removal
shall be done under direct observation by the Project Inspector and/or Architect.
2. Sample testing will include a petrographic examination and chemical analysis of the
lath and plaster system. As a minimum, the analysis will check for system thickness,
bonding between coats, strength properties of the materials, cracking, proper curing
and cement hydration and a section analysis of the cement paste.
3. Should the Work (or portion of the same) fail to meet the requirements of the
specifications or determined to be defective, the Work will be required to be replaced
by the Contractor at no additional cost to the Owner.
4. Contractor is responsible for patching back all locations where samples were taken.
Surrounding cement plaster finish shall be removed to 6 -inches back, all-around, from
where sample was taken leaving only the lath and backing paper. Angle the saw -cut at
sample location so that surface of adhesion is maximized and feathering of patch is
more easily achieved. New backing paper shall be installed over exposed wall
sheathing at patch area and behind existing backing paper and a layer of self-adhesive
flashing membrane shall be installed over the new and existing backing paper. Replace
lath removed at sample area with new lath wired to existing lath and fastened to
substrate. Use specified Bonding Agent at existing, cut plaster edge prior to installation
of cement plaster patch to aid in adhesion and eliminate cracking. Finished patch shall
match adjacent surfaces by feathering out entire area into existing finish.
4
