CERAMIC TILE <br />Section 09300 <br />15-1207 <br />3.05 EXPANSION/CONTROL JOINTS <br />A. Provide expansion/control joints where indicated on the Drawings, and: <br />1. Interior: 20 to 25 -feet in each direction maximum. <br />2. Interior the work exposed to direct sunlight or moisture: 8 to 12 -feet in each direction. <br />3. Where the abuts restraining surfaces such as walls, dissimilar floors, curbs, columns, <br />pipes, ceilings, and where changes occur in backing materials. <br />4. As continuation of expansion joints, control joints, cold joints, and seismic joints in the <br />building structure which occur in tiled areas, making such joints in the tile work not less <br />than width of the joint which is being continued. <br />B. Extend openings for joints completely through the tile, mortar, mortar bed, and reinforcing. <br />1. Make openings for joints the same width as the the joints. <br />2. Keep joints open and free from mortar and grout until filled with sealant. <br />3. Apply joint primer in all wet areas, and apply elsewhere as recommended by the <br />sealant manufacturer. <br />4. Keep joint edges free from dirt, oils, wax, and other contaminants. <br />C. Seal between tile and penetration or restraining surfaces with sealant matching the color of <br />grout/joint filler. Prime and caulk around pipes and conduit going through subfloor or <br />substrate. <br />D. Construct expansion joints in accordance with TCNA EJ 171. <br />E. Verify exact locations of joints with the Architect prior to installation. <br />3.07 TRANSITIONS <br />A. Edge strips: <br />Install edge strips at doors or openings where threshold has not been called for, but <br />where tile floor abuts other flooring material at same level. Where edge strips occur at <br />door openings, center directly below door in closed position. <br />B. Where thresholds are detailed to be installed over tile, install with a full bedding of bonding <br />mortar in addition to mechanical fasteners. <br />3.08 GROUTING <br />A. General: <br />1. Do not begin grouting floor or wall tiles until they are firmly set and, in no case, less <br />than 24- hours after they have been installed. <br />2. Clean grout lines of all loose mortar, foreign objects, tile spacers, ropes, glue, and <br />similar matter prior to grouting. <br />3. Adhere strictly to the manufacturer's printed directions for mixing and installation unless <br />otherwise specified or approved in advance by the Architect. <br />4. Utilize specified cleaners when required to protect tile from staining. <br />B. Installation (in accordance with ANSI A108.10): <br />9 <br />
