Anchorage used for attachment of personal fall arrest equipment shall be independent <br /> of anchorage being used to support or suspend platforms and capable of supporting at <br /> least 5 , 000 lbs . per worker. <br /> 10 . Self-retracting lifelines and lanyards which automatically limit free fall distance to 2 feet <br /> or less shall be capable of sustaining a minimum tensile load of 3 ,000 lbs . <br /> 11 . The entire system must be inspected and documented by a Competent Person prior to <br /> use . <br /> Free Fall Distance <br /> To prevent workers from contacting the level below if a fall occurs , the total free fall distance <br /> must be calculated , to ensure that the amount of fall distance available exceeds free fall <br /> distance , preventing the worker from striking the level below. <br /> 1 . OSHA states that personal fall arrest systems shall be rigged such that an employee <br /> can neither free fall more than 6 feet nor contact any lower level . <br /> 2 . Limiting free fall to 6 feet is not as simple as using 6 foot lanyards . The following <br /> information must be added together to determine the fall distance : length of the <br /> lanyard , height of the worker, deceleration distance , and safety factor.
