At the date of
thie writing, Ponds #1, #2 and #5 have approximately 1 to 2 feet of fluid
remaining in the pond enclosures. Ponds #3 and #4 are dry,
During August 1983, an interior irrigation system was installed in an
' effort to accelerate: the rate of.evaporation. This evaporation
enhancement system was successful in accelerating the rate of fluid
evaporation, however, it was not successful in eliminating thO ,remaining
liquids in_a time period which permitted compliance with the approved
time schedule. -we anticipate that the remaining fluid' can be- evaporated
during the week of September 26, 1983. It will then be necessary to
commence removal of drilling mud residue from Pends #3 and #4 and
excavation of tho..,contaminated portion of the floor liners and pond
embankments.
Prior to our excavation and removal of the contaminated embankment and
liner soil, it will be necessary for the Board staff to inform us of the
chloride ion concentration level above which the soils are considered
Group I waste and must be disposed in Trench A. Once this information
is available, we anticipate completion of pond cleaning and excavation
work to be completed by the week of October 10, 1983. The following
paragraphs include a summary of work remaining to be done and;estimated
compliance dates which differ from the approved compliance dates
contained in the subject Board Order.
1
r
5 v
1365 Vander Way • San Jose, California 95112 • (408) 295-7483
r
t
