F-I-- L, HAZARDOUS WASTE & SPILL CONTROL
The purpose of this policy is to provide a safe environment for Alco employees
and customers. Due to the nature of our business, it is critical that employees are
trained on and understand the importance of handling and disposing of
hazardous waste.
DEFINITION:
Hazardous Waste — is a solid waste" which because of its quantity, concentration
or physical, chemical or infectious characteristics may pose a substantial present
or potential hazard to human health or the environment when improperly
treated, stored or disposed of, or otherwise mismanaged. The most common
forms of hazardous waste at Alco are used engine oil and hydraulic fluid.
SAS — Satellite Accumulation Stations (also known as spill response kit)
Alco has placed several SAS areas around its facilities. Locations of these stations
can be found on our facility maps in the section titled Emergency and Evacuation
Plan. These locations include but are not limited to balers, battery packaging,
torch cutting, and metal sales/fabrication. Each SAS is equipped with two drums
and a secondary containment pallet. One drum is filled with clean absorbent
which is used to pick up any chemical spill. The second drum is for the disposal of
the spilled chemical and should always be labeled properly. The safety manager
is responsible for all labeling.
SPILL CONTROL & RESPONSE
(Local Clean Up) — IF no person has been contaminated by the spill and the spill is
localized do the following:
1. Notify all other personnel in the affected area.
2. Place "absorbent" on the affected area and then mix in well with broom.
3. Once you have mixed the absorbent into the spill, scoop up the "used"
absorbent and place in our "used" absorbent drums at the nearest satellite
accumulation station.
