Lodi Memorial Hospital 8420-EC3-Section C1
Facilities Management 0 0 Page C-2
Environment of Care; Hazardous Materials and Wastes Management Revised: July, 2006
MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN
Medical waste is removed from the facilities by a registered medical waste hauler and treated at an approved off-
site treatment facility. Information below is representative of estimated total pounds of medical waste removed
during a monthly period from each facility.
• Lodi Memorial Hospital; WEST FACILITY ............................... 4,000 pounds per month
• Lodi Memorial Hospital; MAIN FACILITY ................................ 2,200 pounds per month
• Lodi Memorial Hospital; CONRAD BUILDING ........................1,900 pounds per month
• Lodi Memorial Hospital; ALL CLINIC FACILITIES ..................... 250 pounds per month
B. MEDICAL WASTE SEGREGATION CONTAINMENT LABELING AND COLLECTION PROCESSES
Medical waste is contained separately from other wastes at the point of generation. When cleaning patient care
areas, Environmental Services will place all medical wastes into RED BIOHAZARD BAGS labeled with the word,
"Biohazard". These bags are to be impervious to moisture and have strength sufficient to preclude ripping,
tearing, or bursting under normal use and handling. Solid waste from non -patient care areas is not placed in
medical waste collection containers or devices.
The biohazardous waste collection bag is constructed of material that will pass the 165 gram dropped dart impact
resistance test as required by Standard D 170985 of the ASTM. Documentation from the manufacturer of
compliance with these minimum construction standards will be kept on file in Facilities Management. All waste
placed into a red bag is considered to be medical waste. The bags will be tied to prevent spillage in the event the
bag is turned upside down.
All sharps are placed into a container labeled with the words "SHARPS WASTE" or with the international
biohazard symbol and the word "BIOHAZARD". Sharps containers will be rigid puncture proof containers that
when sealed are leak resistant and not able to be reopened without great difficulty. Sharps containers shall be
considered "FULL" when they reach 3/4 capacity or the manufacturer's full line. Lids on filled sharps containers
must be snapped closed, taped, or otherwise sealed to prevent loss of contents prior to disposal.
Medical waste will be stored and transported in rigid containers to the Biohazardous Waste Storage Area located
outside the building inside fenced areas that are secured with padlocks. The containers are labeled with the
words "Biohazardous Waste", to the word "Biohazard", and the international biohazard symbol. This storage
area will be locked at all times. Access is limited to Facilities Management and Environmental Services.
Waste consisting of medical and non-medical waste will be handled as medical waste except as follows:
Medical Waste mixed with Hazardous Waste will be treated as Hazardous Waste.
2. Medical Wasted mixed with Radioactive Waste will be treated as Radioactive Waste.
3. Medical Waste mixed with Hazardous and Radioactive Waste will be treated as Radioactive
Waste.
4. Medical Waste mixed with Pharmaceutical Waste will be treated as Pharmaceutical Waste and
segregated from regular medical waste.
Pathology Waste
Lodi Memorial Hospital does not generate Pathology Waste. Placentas from obstetrics and surgery specimens
and tissues are transferred to Delta Pathology Associates for processing and analysis prior to becoming waste.
