Lodi Memorial Hospital 8420-EC3-Section C1
Facilities Management Page C-3
Environment of Care; Hazardous Materials and Wastes Management Revised: July, 2006
MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN
Chemotherapeutic Waste
All trace contaminated (e.g., empty vials, ampoules, IV bottles/bags, tubing and sharps) will be deposited in
specially marked, yellow collection container labeled with the words "Chemotherapy Waste" or "Chemo". When
the container is full, without compacting, the locking lid is to be secured to prevent loss of contents prior to
disposal. Gowns, gloves, and other trace contaminated non -sharps objects may also be deposited in the
container. A contracted medical waste hauler for transport picks up the containers to an approved incineration
facility when routine medical waste is hauled away for treatment.
Pharmaceutical Waste
Lodi Memorial Hospital generates pharmaceutical waste that is managed by pharmacy services until placed into
locked storage area outside the hospital building. No access is permitted into the pharmaceutical waste
collection/storage area other than pharmacy services and by the Safety Officer.
C. MEDICAL WASTE STORAGE METHODS
All medical waste will be collected and stored in the locked Biohazardous Waste Storage Area until transported
by the medical waste hauler. All biohazardous waste is stored, handled or transported in containers that are leak
resistant, have tight fitting covers and are kept clean and in good repair. Biohazard bags and filled sharps
containers shall not be stored for more than 7 days at a temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This 7 -day
period begins when any waste is placed into the locked storage area.
• Lodi Memorial Hospital; WEST FACILITY ............ Exterior of building on north side, area is covered, fenced,
and locked at all times.
• Lodi Memorial Hospital; MAIN FACILITY ............. Exterior of building on north side, area is covered, fenced,
and locked at all times.
• Lodi Memorial Hospital; CONRAD BUILDING ..... Exterior of building on south side, area is covered, fenced,
and locked at all times.
The storage area shall be marked with warning signs saying in English, "CAUTION - BIOHAZARDUS WASTE
STORAGE AREA - UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT', and in Spanish, "CUIDADO - ZONA DE RESIDUOS
BIOLOGICOS PELIGROSOS - PROHIBIDA LA ENTRADA A PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS".
D. SPILL CONTAINMENT AND CLEANUP
In the event a leak or spill occurs, Environmental Services must be contacted immediately to confine the spill and
to clean the area. Surfaces are decontaminated with a quaternary ammonium solution with a minimum of 400
ppm active agent. The solution is applied to the entire surface and allowed to remain in contact for a minimum of
10 minutes to complete the disinfecting process. Interior storage rooms, counters, and surfaces that may have
come in contact with medical waste contamination must be disinfected. Portable tubs and rigid containers are
removed from the building and taken to the north supply delivery/loading area at either facility for disinfecting.
Materials used or collected, including excess solution is absorbed into disposable paper toweling and discarded
directly into medical waste containers even though it is now rendered non -hazardous. All exterior areas where
decontamination is performed must be washed down with water prior to leaving the area. This clean rinse water
is allowed to run into the storm drain. Reports of all spills, exposures or injuries resulting from the handling of
medical waste is documented through the hospital Occurrence Reporting system.
