MEDICAL WASTE DISPOSAL PROCEDURE <br /> 1.0 APPLICABILITY <br /> Procedure is applicable to all managers and supervisors who have medical waste <br /> accumulation sites. <br /> 2.0 PURPOSE <br /> The purpose of this procedure is to guide all personnel in the disposal of medical waste, <br /> to minimize likelihood of injury and illness to a University employee, minimize <br /> University liability,to maintain a positive public image, and to comply with the Medical <br /> Waste Management Act of 1990. <br /> 3.0 MEDICAL WASTE STREAMS <br /> 3.1 University has the following medical waste streams: <br /> 3.1.1 Animal tissue, body parts, etc.: This waste stream is generated from <br /> teaching and/or research activity and can be managed as medical waste. <br /> 3.1.2 Preserved animal body parts or tissue and human tissue will be managed <br /> as pathology medical waste. <br /> 3.1.3 Sharps will be managed as medical waste. <br /> 3.1.4 Pharmaceuticals (expired or patient returned, etc.) and active ingredients <br /> of pharmaceuticals will be managed as medical waste. <br /> 4.0 DEFINITIONS <br /> 4.1 Medical Waste <br /> The following materials will be considered medical waste for the purpose of <br /> disposal. <br /> 4.1.1. Cultures and broths from medical and pathological laboratories known to <br /> contain human pathogenic or virulent organisms. <br /> 4.1.2. Discarded live or attenuated vaccines as well as the devices and culture <br /> dishes used to transfer, inoculate, and mix these vaccines. <br /> 4.1.3. Animal parts, fluids,tissues, or carcasses suspected by the attending <br /> veterinarian of being contaminated with infectious agents known to be <br /> contagious to humans. <br /> 4.1.4. Devices that contain human, fluid blood and fluid blood products. <br /> 4.1.5. Microorganisms or materials contaminated with microorganism that are <br /> classified as Biosafety IV.
